Kitchen Details: Shelving & Cabinetry in front of Windows

One of my favorite things about design is that often times a challenging, awkward space can yield the most fascinating feature that becomes a focal point and a topic of conversation.
I think most people would shudder at the thought of placing cabinetry or shelves in front of a window. When done right, it can be absolutely beautiful!

Placement is key. Shelving should align with mullions to naturally divide the window.

Shelving should be the same color as the rest of the cabinetry. Here, white and turquoise objects on the shelves blend beautifully.

These shelves follow the proportions of the window million for a balanced appearance.

Is there any place more perfect for an herb garden?!

This works because the cabinetry mimicks the windows exactly for a seemless look.

Again, the cabinetry mimicks the windows perfectly.

Glass shelves help to keep the look airy and light.

Placing glassware in front of the windows and white bowls in front of the wall makes these shelves blend into the space without feeling obtrusive.

Fulk Yeah!!! Ken Fulk for Pottery Barn

Last week, San Francisco designer,  Ken Fulk announced he would be designing a collection for Pottery Barn. This is the first collaboration for the retailer.

Trudy Elliott for PB with JAM at Ken Fulk's party last week.
(PB with JAM!!!)

Ken Fulk has a varied portfolio and is known for using color so my curiosity is peaked as to what his collection will look like.

**Update: Here's a preview of a few items that will be in the collection.  Images via here.

Here's a peak into his portfolio. We'll have to wait until August to see the rest of what he and PB come up with!

Austin Tour of Homes - Part III

In this 3rd post about the Austin tour of homes, this group of houses is situated in a development way out in the Austin Hill Country. The Reserve has its own marina on Lake Travis, an equestrian center, a theme-park style swim center with Lazy river, slide for the kiddos and a swim up bar for the grown ups.

There were seven homes on tour. I took photos of the first five and I guess I gradually did more chatting than taking pics;) But these will give you an idea of what's being built out here.

The first home had Restoration Hardware EVerything!!!

I liked this baseboard detail made out of steel plate.

Counters and backsplash were slabs of Calcutta Gold Marble.

House Number 2

The view to the pool immediately through the front door.

Adjacent to the entry were these storage cabinets with fab lucite and brass pulls.

Two story Family room open to the kitchen and dining space.

Loved the unlaquered brass throughout this home.

On to number 3!

Sliding barn door into Master Bath.

Pretty backsplash detail.

Number 4!

Number 5.

Hope everyone is having a great week!
